How to make flashcards that work: rules and GCSE examples

A flashcard that works asks one question on the front and has one short answer on the back — something you can mark right or wrong in under ten seconds. Most flashcards fail because they carry a topic name on the front and a paragraph on the back, which can only be re-read, never tested. Below are the rules, worked Biology, History and Maths examples showing a bad card becoming two or three good ones, and how many to make and how to review them.

What a flashcard is for

A flashcard is a retrieval prompt. Its only job is to make you produce an answer from memory before you see it.

That matters because producing an answer, rather than recognising one, is what builds the memory. In the study by Roediger and Karpicke (2006), students who were tested on a passage remembered more of it a week later than students who spent the same time re-reading it. Dunlosky and colleagues (2013) rated practice testing as one of only two techniques with high utility across ages, subjects and materials. A deck of flashcards is practice testing in its most portable form.

Which is also why most decks disappoint. A card that cannot be answered — a topic label on the front, a paragraph on the back — is not a test but a very small page of notes, and flipping through it is re-reading in a smaller format. Every rule below exists to make each card a genuine question.

The six rules of a card that works

  • One fact per card. If the back has three parts, you will remember two, call it right, and never learn the third. Split it. A card is finished when it has exactly one thing to get wrong.
  • A question on the front, not a topic. "Enzymes" is a heading. "Why does an enzyme stop working above its optimum temperature?" is a card. If the front does not end in a question mark or an instruction — state, name, give, calculate — rewrite it.
  • No paragraph cards. A back you cannot hold in your head in one go cannot be marked. Aim for an answer you could say aloud in under ten seconds. Anything longer is a written-answer question, not a card.
  • Use cloze deletion for rules and sentences. Cloze means blanking one word or phrase from a sentence: "The angle at the centre is ___ the angle at the circumference." It suits definitions, laws, equations in words and quotations, and it stops you paraphrasing a line you need exactly.
  • Make it reversible where both directions matter. Term to definition and definition to term; French to English and English to French; equation to name and name to equation. If you only make one direction, only one direction gets practised, and exams ask both ways.
  • Add an image when the exam will show one. An unlabelled diagram with "label the four chambers" on the front, a graph shape to sketch, a map with a location to name. If the paper tests it visually, test it visually. If it does not, the picture is decoration.

One more habit: write cards in your own words, because a sentence copied from a textbook tests whether you recognise that sentence, and write the back the way you would want to write it in the exam — unit, key term, number — so that marking yourself is honest.

Biology: before and after

Biology notes tend to become cards with a process name on the front and the whole process on the back. Two typical cards, and what they should become:

The first card had five separate facts on the back; nobody would ever have marked it wrong. The three replacements each have one answer, and the third — "name three" — is the shape a two-mark exam question actually takes. A reversible card for chlorophyll completes the set.

History: before and after

History cards fail in the opposite direction: the front is a fair question, but it is a twelve-mark question, and the back is the essay. Cards hold the ammunition, not the argument.

The pattern is the same for any period: each cause, consequence, date, name and figure gets its own card, and one "name three" card ties them together. "Why did X happen?" stays on your list of essay questions to plan, which is a different job — see how to revise essay subjects.

Maths: before and after

Maths cards hold formulae, definitions, facts and the steps of set methods. They cannot hold problem-solving, which is practised with questions.

The image card is the one most students never make, and it is the closest to what the paper will show. One card per theorem, each with a sketch, beats a list of five you can recite and cannot apply.

How many cards per topic

Roughly eight to fifteen cards for a topic the size of one lesson, and somewhere between one and three hundred for a full GCSE subject by the end of the course.

Those are working numbers, not rules. If a topic produces forty cards, they are probably too small — "what is the symbol for sodium?" forty times over. If it produces three, each is carrying too much. Make cards for what the exam can ask you to state, name, define, calculate or label; leave out what it can only ask you to explain at length. And make them as you go, topic by topic, rather than in one half-term weekend.

The test of a card

Could a stranger mark you right or wrong from the back alone, without knowing the topic? If they would have to judge whether your answer was "close enough", the card is too big.

How to review them

Answer before you flip, every time — say or write it, then turn the card and mark yourself honestly. A card flipped without an answer has just been re-read.

  1. Keep three piles: right, nearly, wrong. Start every session with the wrong pile and finish with a handful from the right pile as a check.
  2. Shuffle, and mix subjects. Cards in the order you wrote them test the order. Twenty cards from three subjects in one sitting is harder and holds better than sixty from one.
  3. Space the sessions. A card you got right today should come back in a few days, then a week, then a fortnight. Reviews spread across time beat the same reviews in one sitting, and the gap should grow when a card is right and shrink when it is wrong. The full schedule is in spaced repetition for GCSE.
  4. Retire cards. One you have got right four times at growing gaps has done its job; take it out so your time goes to the ones still wrong.
  5. Rewrite the ones that keep failing. Three wrong attempts usually means the card is bad, not that you are: too big, ambiguous, or carrying two answers. Split it.

Making the deck is admin; answering it cold is the revision. A deck that is finished and never used was an expensive way of copying out your notes.

Where an app helps

Paper cards are fine for a topic. Across nine subjects and a few hundred cards, the scheduling is the part that stops happening.

Anki and Quizlet both handle that. FacilStudy starts a step earlier — you photograph your own notes and it drafts the cards, which you check and fix on a review screen before anything is saved, and a daily plan then picks about fifteen minutes of due cards across all your subjects. Common questions

How many flashcards should I make for a GCSE subject?
Eight to fifteen per lesson-sized topic, which comes to one to three hundred for a subject by the end of the course. Make them as each topic is taught rather than in one weekend, and retire the ones you always get right.
Should the front of a flashcard be a question or a keyword?
A question, or an instruction such as "name three". A keyword on the front only works when the card is reversible and the back is a definition; for anything else, a keyword invites you to recite everything you know and mark yourself right.
What is a cloze flashcard?
A sentence with one word or phrase blanked out, which you fill in from memory. It suits rules, laws, formulae in words and quotations, where you need the exact wording rather than a paraphrase.
Are paper or digital flashcards better?
Paper wins for a single topic and for anything you are still learning, because writing the card is itself revision. Digital wins once you have a few hundred cards across several subjects, because the app decides what is due each day.
Do flashcards work for essay subjects?
For the recall layer — quotations, dates, key terms, context — yes. They cannot teach you to plan or write an argument, which needs timed answers marked against the mark scheme.
