Spaced repetition for GCSE: how to make it stick

Spaced repetition means revisiting a topic several times with growing gaps between the visits — 1 day, 3 days, 7 days, 14 days, then 30 — instead of studying it once for a long time. It works because the moment just before you forget something is the moment that re-learning it sticks best, and because trying to recall it is what strengthens the memory, not reading it again. It is one of the best-supported techniques in the research on learning, it costs nothing to run on paper, and almost everyone who tries it stops in week three for reasons that are entirely fixable.

Why you forget, and why re-reading does not fix it

Forgetting is not a fault in your memory; it is what memory does by default. Anything learned once and not used again fades, quickly at first and then more slowly. Hermann Ebbinghaus described the shape of that curve in the 1880s and it has held up ever since.

The instinctive response — read the notes again — fails for a specific reason. Re-reading makes a page feel familiar, and familiarity is easily mistaken for knowing. You recognise the layout, the highlighter, the phrase near the bottom, and conclude the topic is fine. Then the exam asks the question without the page in front of you, and the feeling turns out to have been about the page.

What actually strengthens a memory is trying to pull it out of an empty head, especially when that is difficult. Effortful recall is uncomfortable, feels like it is going badly, and works. This is why the two things below always come together: spacing decides when you revisit, retrieval decides what you do when you get there. Spacing on its own, with re-reading, buys you very little.

What spacing actually is

Spacing means splitting the same total study time across several sessions with gaps between them, rather than spending it all in one go. Same hours, different arrangement, substantially better retention weeks later.

Four thirty-minute sessions on photosynthesis spread across a month beat one two-hour session, and it is not close. The gap does the work: each time you come back the memory has faded a little, so retrieving it takes effort, and that effort is what makes it durable. Cram the four into one evening and every retrieval is easy, the material feels mastered, and most of it is gone by half term.

This is not a fringe finding. In their review of ten common study techniques, Dunlosky and colleagues (2013) rated only two as high utility across ages, subjects and abilities: practice testing and distributed practice. Highlighting, re-reading and summarising — the three things most students spend most of their revision doing — were rated low. The spacing effect itself is among the most replicated results in the psychology of learning.

One honest caveat: spaced revision feels worse than cramming while you are doing it. You will get things wrong that you "knew" last week. That is the mechanism working, not a sign you have wasted the earlier session.

A schedule you can run on paper

You do not need an app to start. The standard beginner schedule is 1, 3, 7, 14, 30 — review a topic the day after you learn it, then three days later, then a week, then a fortnight, then a month.

To run it, write each topic on a card and write the five review dates in the corner. Keep a diary page per week; when you learn a topic, write it into the five future weeks straight away. The whole system is one page of a notebook, and its only real cost is that you must look at the diary every day.

A note on getting it wrong: the schedule is a default, not a law. If Review 2 goes badly, repeat it the next day rather than pressing on to the seven-day gap. If it goes perfectly twice, skip a step. Gaps should grow with confidence and shrink with error.

What apps do that paper cannot

Software's contribution is not the flashcards; it is the diary. An app can hold thousands of cards, each on its own personal schedule, and hand you the twenty that are due today.

The mechanism is simple. When you answer a card you say how it went; an easy card comes back after a longer gap than last time, a failed one comes back tomorrow. Over a few weeks each card converges on its own interval, so you spend your time on what you keep forgetting and almost none on what you know. The trade-off is control: the app decides what is due, which is what makes it useful and what makes it feel like a chore when the queue builds. And it can only schedule cards that exist — turning notes into good questions is still your job, and a deck of vague cards gets rehearsed just as diligently as a good one.

Why students give up on it — and the fixes

Almost nobody abandons spaced repetition because it stopped working. They abandon it for one of five reasons, and each has a specific fix.

  • The backlog. Miss four days, come back to three hundred due cards, feel defeated, never open it again. Fix: cap the daily review at twenty minutes and take the oldest cards first. A backlog you are working through is fine; a backlog you are looking at is fatal. After a long gap, delete or postpone the backlog outright rather than trying to clear it.
  • Too many cards, made too fast. A thousand cards built in one weekend produces an unmanageable queue by week two. Fix: no more than twenty new cards a day, and only from topics you have already been taught.
  • Bad cards. Cards with paragraphs on the back cannot be judged right or wrong, so every review becomes a re-read. Fix: one fact per card, a question on the front, answerable in under ten seconds.
  • It feels like it is going badly. Getting things wrong is the point, but it feels like failure, and cramming feels like success. Fix: track the number of cards you have retired, not the number you got right today.
  • No fixed time. "I will do my cards later" reliably becomes never. Fix: attach it to something that already happens every day — the bus, the ten minutes after dinner, before the shower. Fifteen minutes at a fixed time beats an hour whenever you remember.

The general principle behind all five: make the daily commitment small enough that a bad day cannot break it. A system you run at half strength for eight weeks beats a perfect system you run for nine days.

How it fits into a revision timetable

Spaced repetition is not an alternative to a revision timetable; it is the layer underneath one. The timetable decides which topic gets worked on this week. Spacing decides which of the topics you already did comes back today.

  1. Split each study day in two: one longer session on new or weak material from the timetable, and one short review session on what is due.
  2. Put the review session first. It is short, it is decided for you, and starting with it removes the "what should I do today" problem that eats most revision time.
  3. When you finish a topic in the timetable, immediately write its five review dates into the diary. If it never gets scheduled, it never comes back.
  4. Mix subjects in the review session. Mixed practice is harder and retains better than doing one subject at a time, and it means no subject silently disappears for a month.
  5. In the last fortnight before exams, stop adding new cards and review only what you have got wrong before. Nothing new goes in during the final week.

How long before an exam should I start spaced repetition?
